When my boss shared this to me in full pop-up mode, I was mesmerized. A real humbling treasure. The first ever 35 mm film, taken by a camera mounted on the front of a cable car. This was filmed only four days before the Great California Earthquake on April 18, 1906.
The clock tower at the end of Market St. at Embarcadero is front and center in this film, and I just shake my head in wonder of how many lifetimes this particular building has “seen”.
The rambling traffic of cable cars, (vintage) cars, horse carts, people (with great sense of fashion, I have to add), and bicycles keeps adding textures to this great piece of art.
I’m so humbled seeing this video; hope you will be too,

It all seems both familiar and foreign. Ghostlike. People running and driving every which way. Still the scent of gold rush and fever in general. The synapse of horses and horsepower. And above all, a nostalgic record of impermanence.
Yes, I totally agree. It’s both awe-inspiring and eerie to look at sometimes. It feels like a forbidden time travel sometimes, which makes it all the more exciting to watch. What a difference a century makes….
