I cannot help but feeling happy after seeing Laurence and Chico Spring/Summer 2015 lookbook. The design duo debuted this ‘aQuarium’ collection during NYFW earlier this month. Photos: Courtesy of Totem Fashion.
You can tell whether a design collaboration for two individuals (or more) are successful first by looking at the results. For Laurence and Chico, a young label that’s only started in January 2015, the results are surreal. Laurence Li and Chico Wang both attended Parsons The New School; Laurence majored in Fashion Marketing and interned at Barneys Buying Department, whereas Chico majored in Fashion Design and worked in Visual Design for nine years. Chico worked with top brands such as Alexander McQueen, Givenchy, Miu Miu, as well as luxury boutique Lane Crawford, among others.
I stumbled upon the duo’s Laurence and Chico Spring/Summer 2016 collection by accident, actually. I was browsing the list of clients from Totem Fashion, a PR company that represents many emerging designers for London and Paris Fashion Week. And among the photos of beautiful garments, Laurence and Chico’s collection, titled ‘aQuarium’ stood out.
Inspired by marine creatures (you can see a picture of jelly fish cluster in blue waters from their Instagram or Facebook account), Laurence and Chico made garments that are energetic, youthful, eccentric, and always high fashion. The cartoonish squid prints and polka dots are strategically placed and exuberant, but never childish.
I’m sure Laurence and Chico label is only beginning its first chapter of success journey. Now that they have New York Fashion Week SS16 showcase under their belt, I’m looking forward to see more fun imagination from them. Bravo.
